The Symposium on Economic Analysis, which had been organized by the Department of Economic Theory of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 1976, became the annual conference of the Spanish Economic Association.

Since its 2001 edition, the Symposium has been organized each year by a different institution. In 2009 the congress changed its name to Symposium of the Spanish Economic Association.
